The 2nd Annual Statistical Detection of Potential Test Fraud Conference

Test fraud strikes at the heart of test validity; without honest results, appropriate inferences cannot be drawn from test scores. Producers and users of test results must be vigilant in protecting the integrity of test results, while safe-guarding the right of examinees to receive fair treatment. Over the years, testing organizations have developed and used statistical methods to look for highly unlikely results and thus raise questions that could lead to invalidating test results. However, little of this work has been disseminated at conferences or peer reviewed journals. Moreover, without a significant research literature base, the new generation of researchers have little opportunity or incentive to improve on existing methods.

By presenting methods currently used by testing organizations and research on new methods, the Statistical Detection of Potential Test Fraud Conference offers an important forum to examine a variety of methods, such as:

• Novel algorithms to detect and prevent item harvesting, preknowledge, or test collusion
• Detection of test fraud on technology-based tests (including evidence from different item types and response latency data, and development of on-the-fly detection algorithms)
• Identification of test or test score tampering
• Unusual similarity or answer copying detection
• Use of external or collateral information to detect test fraud
• Detection of manufactured student growth, including identifying non-effortful student behavior

The 2013 conference will include both papers and posters. Papers will be grouped thematically into sessions, each having a discussant. Discussants include Greg Cizek, Wim van der Linden, and Lawrence Rudner. The conference will open with a reception on the evening of Thursday, October 17, and will run all day on October 18 (including a keynote address from Greg Cizek and a poster-session reception that evening on beautiful Lake Monona). On Saturday, October 19, the conference will resume at 9:00am, allowing early-risers to enjoy the largest producer-only farmer’s market in the country, just three blocks away at the Wisconsin State Capitol. Events will conclude at 2:00 p.m. Thanks to the generous support of sponsoring organizations, conference registration will remain at $75 again this year.
