Formative Assessment
The formative-assessment process provides information focused on the direct improvement of student learning, either by providing students with information they need to regulate their own learning or by providing teachers with information they need to modify instruction while they are teaching. As such, formative-assessment tools must focus on narrow sets of related concepts or skills – either single lessons or small units of study. Feedback during the formative-assessment process must identify sources of misconceptions or skill deficiencies in such a way as to assist students in correcting their understanding. The formative-assessment process thereby impacts learning on a frequent and immediate basis.
Formative assessments are excellent tools to apply within RtI or MTSS programs, perhaps with tier two interventions, as they provide skill specific feedback to teachers and students.
