Summative Assessments

Summative assessments provide information about the depth and breadth of what students have learned. Often, summative assessment results are used as part of a state’s accountability system. Because summative assessments are given at the end of a course of instruction, typically at the end of the school year, they do not directly impact a student’s learning. This type of assessment can serve as part of an in-depth review of the curriculum and instruction, which can improve the learning of future students. Summative assessment information can also illustrate program strengths as well as highlight areas where professional development can help to improve teaching and learning.
